In the United States arrested a student for stealing Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in the amount of $5 million. According to investigators, Joel Ortiz stole digital assets using a hacking technique called "Theft of the SIM card" (SIM jacking).
20-year-old student, together with accomplices learned more than four phone numbers, belonging to cryptocurrency investorsthat participated in the blockchain conference in new York in may this year. They changed the phone numbers of victims to your room, changed the passwords cryptocurrency accounts protected with two-factor authentication, and then transferred the digital assets on your crypto. In total hackers managed to steal the cryptocurrency in the amount of $5 million.
Ortiz was arrested at the international airport of Los Angeles while trying to go to Europe. Now he is accused of committing 28 crimes, which include:
- 13 counts of identity theft.
- 13 episodes of hacking.
- 2 episodes of misappropriation of funds in large size.
This is the first reported case in U.S. history, when hackers use a technique stolen SIM cards to steal cryptocurrency. This attack is directed to a security system operator - attackers change the phone number of the target for the number belonging to the SIM cards and using this to access various online accounts of the victim.
